DeafNation Expo in Chicago at Harper College.
In Harper College at Palatine, IL. We set up a booth for DCI- Deaf Communication By Innovation. DCI is located in Chicago, IL area. We promoted for DCI and Deaf Illinois Awards. One of our worker, Matt Liberman and I spent all day there and we enjoyed meeting new and old friends there. While we were there, there were some information that we may have not thought of or have it in our system. Who knows...such deaf interpreting and entertainment events to host in Chicago area. That would be a great idea to add in our company. Of course, we would have to discuss and see if this is possible. Again, anything is possible to make it happen. :-) Secondly, we also advertised that we will have Deaf Illinois Awards happening in May 14, 2011. I know there are some events happen at the same weekend but it is always great to go every one of them. Such as Deaf Illinois Awards, Manifest at Columbia College, IL, and many many many more. More information will be post on this later.

"Detroit" at Steppenwolff Theater in Chicago- Laurie Metcalf
The production that Steppenwolff did last night was one of the best show I've seen by far. I enjoyed meeting the cast members and crews. They made us feel that we are welcome and they welcome deaf community. I was pleased with their production and the atomsphere they gave us. If anyone have not seen this production at Steppenwolff Theatre in Chicago, "Detroit". Go see it! It would be worth of your time. "Sicko" Movie: Have you seen it?
"Sicko" by Michael Moore
Michael Moore is a film documentary and well-known person who fights for your right in the US. He sets his sights on the plight of the uninsured in this Oscar-nominated documentary that uses Moore's trademark humor and confortational style to ask the difficult questions and get to the truth behind the health care crisis. In the world's richest country, 45 million people have no health insurance, while HMO's grow in size and wealth. Moore also explores the widespread use of antidepressants and their possible link to violence. This documentary is about 2 hours and 3 min. It was filmed back in 2007. (Netflix)
You know, the way I look at life in the US and in the country they were showing it. It truly opened my eyes about settling there and retired in the future. Many people always telling me that we are in a recession. I was discussing this with someone after watching it. He made a very good point that if we are actually in the recession, we wouldn't be able to make any payments or have funds at all. We will be running out of money in no time. So, if it is not a recession, then what is it then? What is another word for us to define where we are right now... Many terms I could think of, it would be: Denial, Slow Recovery, Financial in Debt, Financial Crisis, Depression, Non-Disastrous Recession and many many many more.
I felt extremely low and embarrasing after watching it about how US are using people, when they are in need or need support from the government and they are abandoning us. I looked at the 3rd world country and they are struggle as well as us. However they are very cautious about what is going on in their lives and being careful. I was in shock to see how many people in the US didn't get any assistance from the government back in the day. Yet, to this day, did it improve? I don't know. Will it get better? I don't know. Will we be able to get back where we once was? I don't know.
When I was reading about recession in general and I came across this article By Joanne Fritz, http://www.about.com/ . It talks about Nonprofits Need to Ride Out Economic Storms guide: How do you keep your nonprofit financially stable when the economy has the jitters and donors have cold feet? Weathering a bad economy should not send your nonprofit skittering to the bunkers, but it should sharpen your focus and improve your efficiencies. Here are several suggestions to consider for the economic bad times.
1. Don't pull back on fundraising.
2. Let your donors know that those you help are in more need than ever.
3. Find the stories that will touch the hearts of your donors.
4. Stay in touch with people who have stopped giving.
5. Find new donors in industries that are still thriving.
6. Take the opportunity to lower fundraising costs.
7. Cut costs - sensibly
8. Take a new look at projects you intended to raise money for.
These are one of the good examples. Another example you can check out this article which is great.

New President for ASL Club at Columbia College, Chicago, IL

Hi all!!
I want to wish you all well as we're approaching the last days of summer vacation :)
The fall semester is upon us and I can feel it...do you feel it? IT'S GONNA BE AN AWESOME YEAR!!
First off, I want to introduce myself to you, for those who don't know me, I'm Dyani and I am the President of the ASL Club this school year. I'm a junior and the class I'm most excited about is taking Storytelling with Peter Cook.
Feel free to message/friend/whatever me on here and tell me about your fave classes! I've updated our facebook page to reflect the upcoming events. I signed us up to be a performing club in convocation this year and as a result, we have ASL Karaoke! We have a 15 minute slot (12:30-12:45) to have members sign along to songs of their choice. If you would like to do this, shoot me an email! Since we only have 15 minutes, I'm thinking we can do 4-5 people, so hurry hurry!
Also, we will have a info table representing our club in the Communication tent. If you would like to volunteer to make buttons and hand out things with our department on them, let me know as well. Convocation lasts from 12-3pm and they want people to man the table the entire time. It's a way for us to get exposure to the new students and hopefully gain some new members! :)
I hope all this sounds as exciting to you as it does to me!!
Shoot me an email if you'd like to volunteer! I'll have news shortly on when our first meeting will be!

Hello,
I am excited to hear the news about the film Cyrus did for ATL. They showed their film for Festival League and its an horror movie. ATL showed it on Sunday, August 15, 2010. I would love to be there and watch it with everyone but our time will come in Midwest. :-) Where did I get this information? Doug’s rehabilitation process, both absurdly funny and heartbreakingly sad, is by no means limited to the ex-con. When his overheated female pen pal in hot pursuit arrives bearing gifts, the play explores the characters' mutual feelings of pain, guilt, and fear which lead to a tenuous recovery that is both hopeful and real. "VISUAL MUSIC: Interpreting Music in American Sign Language" by Rev. Dr.Raymont Anderson
Rev. Dr. Raymont Anderson was my former interpreter at University of Maryland, College Park, MD. He has done a great job doing what he enjoys the most. He recently released his first book called, "VISUAL MUSIC: Interpreting Music in American Sign Language". It is a blessing to know there is a book coming out about music, interpreting, and american sign language for the deaf communities. I wish him the best of luck and his work in the future.

About the Author:
Raymont Anderson, a life long student, loves the process of learning new things and improving the skills that he already possesses. He holds several degrees: an Associate Degree in illustration and graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from Carlow College, Associate Degree in interpreting and certificate in deaf studies from Community College of Allegheny county, Master of fine Arts in Theatre Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University, Doctor of Divinity from The American Institute of Holistic Theology and at this writing he is completing a dual PhD program. Through the American Institute of Holistic Theology he is completing a PhD in metaphysics and through the University of Sedona , a PhD in Holistic Life Coaching. He currently works in the Arundel County Public School System where he teaches ASL to high school students. He also serves as a certified Holistic Life Coach, visual artist, Ordained Minister, ASL performing artist, freelance interpreter, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend.
About the book:
Visual Music will assist you in creating a more conceptual presentation of not only interpreted musical pieces, it will assist you in developing a more conceptually accurate, visually pleasing, and idiomatic style of ASL.
Over the years, I have met countless people who desire to sign (interpret or perform) songs in ASL. It has been my experience that, of those that want to do this, many are unaware of how to do so in a conceptually accurate manner. There are many people stuck in the box of transliteration only because they don't know how to get out of that particular box. Many of us are not taught how to sign in a more idiomatic and visual manner, let alone sign songs that are inherently more conceptual than literal.
What I am presenting for you in this text is a summarized version of what I teach in my “American Sign Language and Performing” class at Prince George's Community College. I have selected several of the tools and skills that I have learned and have used since beginning this performance art form in 1992. Having successfully used them and taught them to others who have also successfully used, I know that they work. My presentation format is similar to the way I teach the course and I hope that you find it as easy to follow and free flowing as you would in the class.
While this book was written to address certain issues related to “perform / interpret” songs in ASL, I want to make sure it is clear that this text is also of benefit to those who adamantly are opposed and disinterested with music and ASL. The skills I will introduce, such as conceptual accuracy, use of facial expression and body language as a storytelling device, use of visual vernacular, acting and several “Rayisms,” will be beneficial to anyone and everyone seeking to improve their expressive ASL skills.
OK, so relax, take a breath, turn the pages, and get ready to put your hands up and sign, act, and dance your way to greater proficiency.
