I am glad to see this because it is about all individuals with disabilities expressed about life. Yes, Life! We have a variety barriers and we are still fighting to make our dream happened. Here is to 2014 everyone. Happy New Year!

ASL Documentary-Regina Daniels (CSUMB Instructor), Directed by ASL 201 Student- Belen Sabi/Chelsea Daniel

I am pleased to share this with you all. One of my ASL 201 students did a mini-documentary film for her class project along with Chelsea Daniel. Sarika Mehta was my interpreter during the interview. It was wonderful working with all of them. The reason Ms. Sabi wanted to show CSUMB (California State University-Monterey Bay) about how the students feel about ASL, teachers put a full focus on making sure students are learning the language, culture, and being involved in deaf community. Belen Sabi is one of my student who worked hard and dedicated her time to make sure she is learning in class and outside of class. I began to noticed students in our ASL department use sign language to communicate with ASL instructors outside of class, such as Starbucks, Peets & Coffee, or any other cafe on campus. They enjoyed the silent and just using our hands to communicate with each other. Other students noticed and immediately decided to register our ASL classes.

Looking at the schedule, we've noticed our ASL classes are growing and more students are interested in taking ASL minor, or possibility to become an interpreter in the future. Others want to work with deaf and hard of hearing children in school.

LAKERS ON THE SOUTHWEST PLANE! (Not all guys were on it)

Today was one of my good day when I was on my way to San Jose Airport. Arriving from LAX -Southwest Airline, I had to change plan to head over to San Jose Airline. While I looked for my gate number and couldn't find it. I looked up to see the signs which gate I was supposed to go, I looked and noticed two tall guys were standing next to me side by side as they were walking.. I looked to my right and then left, then looked back up. "I think I found my gate and I am an hour early". I looked around to see if there is any food I can grab to eat before I leave LAX. I spotted one tall guy and noticed their clothes- they all worn black with Lakers logos. I shrugged my shoulder and moved on. Saw another one again, I was thinking, wait a min, this dude looks familiar... anyway.. moving on to find something to eat.. a lady walked up to one of the Laker teamplayer and asked for autograph, "said, oh my.. my daughter wanted your autograph and it would be an honor".. I looked one who was walking toward my direction to the same gate I was waiting for. My mind went blank then finally it caught on, "Oh wait! Lakers!!! awesome dudes"- dang what's wrong with me.. anyhow..

I walked to my gate with pre-boarding pass and noticed people were taking pictures and such. I knew what they were doing but why do it up close? I looked back and realized they're standing the same line as I was. I looked at one of the guy who I kept looking and trying to figure it out.. I was like, ohhhh you're the lakers.. awesome then I went back to do what I was doing.. One guy laughed. The person who handled the tickets knew I was deaf. He signed a bit to me and told me to continue. I went in and sat. One sweet lady was sitting next to me with her iphone on. She had a video camera-ready. I laughed and the guys came in. One of them had to dunk his head because he was too long. I looked and laughed. He smiled and kept walking.

That was one of the cool experience I witnessed today.

Guys I recognized- only few were there. They were: Xavier Henry, Wesley Johnson, Ryan Kelly, Shawne Williams, and Jodie Meeks. There were others but couldn't pinpoint most of them.

It was an honor to write an article for Steppenwolf Theater Company. I worked with them nearly 3 years and it was a blessing to share my experience. TRIBES and I have a similar experience when growing up. My childhood- I thank my family who supported me and encouraged me to succeed in the future. I am blessed that I have arrived to where I am and looking forward to see what my future will bring.

Moved to Monterey, California

Hello everyone,

Hope all of you will enjoy your thanksgiving holiday as I am enjoying my time here. I know I have not maintain my blog since I last posted about the shows here in Chicago, IL. I've made a huge decision and moved to Monterey, Ca. An opportunity came and knocked at my door, I grabbed the opportunity. Since I made the move, things are starting to look up and on a slow pace. Teaching at CSUMB is a different experience but quite challenging at the same time. 

Overall, I've met a lot of people and learned new things from them. I thank them and glad I met new friends. I look forward to continue working hard toward that path. More info- Contact me through here.

Lee Hong-Ki and Fijimi just ended their tv show. To my surprised, it ended short. I had thought it would last longer like the rest of the other tv shows. After watching these two couples, I cried and cried. The two of them made me realized that memories are precious and always cherish the person you are with. A goal for international trip - summer of 2014 (Pending)

Few trips may happen next summer of 2014 which are Japan and Paris, France. These two trips I hope to achieve in 2014. When that time comes, I will be posting photos and updates regarding the upcoming trip. If my goal did not happen, it is okay.. I can always try to attend one instead of both trips. 

Starting this fall of 2013 to Summer of 2014, I will be working with CSUMB (California State University in Monterey, Ca) and teach ASL. It will be a new experience and am nervous at the same time. With these trips coming, I hope to post more details on this blog and probably will update my website in the future.

Synopsis:

In anticipation of her birthday, Shelah’s family and friends gather at her home in the Head of Passes—the mysterious shifting marshlands at the mouth of the great Mississippi River. As the guests appear, so do ghosts from the past, and Shelah’s convictions about her life begin to dissolve, along with her home in the Louisiana rain. Ensemble members Tarell Alvin McCraney and Tina Landau team up again for this wise, warm world-premiere drama about faith, family and finding your place in the world.

I absolutely agree with this statement and how fashion really impact on your looks. It's one of those coats that is the outfit. Like those days where you don't know what to wear or have no clean shirts, you just toss on jeans, any kind of top, and an awesome jacket like KHJ's and you look amazing! On a side note, check out his cute studded sneakers!"

Now, don't get me wrong, I admired how they dressed and can easily find clothes that will suit them well. I know for me personally, I have tried and it didn't work. Maybe it has to do with the climate or the season during spring, summer, winter, and fall clothes. If I am fortunately enough to purchase these items, I know it'll rock in any season. :-)

Franklin Burns is a Rockstar Teacher!

Here’s what Cindy, a colleague of Mr Burns at Saint Tower Academy had to say about him. Truly amazing!

Franklin L. Burns is an exceptional teacher and person. He opened up his own school in 2007 to aid the community and those families in need. He did not even take a paycheck the first 12 months because he believed in the cause and saw the vision of the school. He is dubbed the “child whisperer” by his peers because he can take a child that every other person has had difficulty disciplining and educating and make that child thrive in all academia. He holds seminars regarding child behavior and positive discipline in the community. He has undoubtedly the most positive attitude and has done many hours of community service. He deserves Quickschools Teacher of the Year Award.

We then asked Mr Burns a few questions…

How did you get into teaching?

When I was in high school, I was in a special education class for my behavior. I was a very smart child but the typical teacher was not able to help me reach my potential. Due to the circumstances, this lead to a lot of frustration and very low grades in high school. Once I was placed in the special education classroom I had a teacher named Mrs. Cross that saw the potential in me. She was able to help me improve my grades and my behavior. I always wanted to pay this forward to other students and instill her passion that she gave me for education into students with special needs. I finished my degree through University of Houston Downtown and went through the alternative certification process to become a teacher in special education. After my second year of teaching, I wanted to improve my teaching skills and went back to college to obtain a master’s degree in special education. When I received my master’s degree in special education, I opened a school for students with special needs. The goal of the school is to give the students with special needs the educational experiences that they would not receive in the self-contained classroom. I have learned a lot since opening the school such as leadership skills, chemistry, astronomy, biology, and the hardships of opening a school. I have truly enjoyed working with all the students and parents at the school.

What do you hope for your students?

The educational goal for my students is for them to no longer have the intellectual disability label. Many of the students have intelligence quotient (IQ) below 70 and I would like the students to become more educationally intelligent. I would love to see my students improve in all subject areas but especially in reading. I believe reading is the most important subject and teaching the students to have reading as recreation is an important skill for learning. Another goal for my students is for them to become contributors to the community and society.

Anything you’d like to share with us? e.g. favorite moments, etc.

I have five dogs, four cats, two goats, two ducks, one amazon parrot, and one horse. I have a tutoring and a health and beauty business that helps fund the school. I am currently being tutored by the founder of Morning Glory Ranch, a hippo-therapy facility for students with autism. I’m also in the process on working on my second master’s degree in Board Certified & Behavior Analyst (BCBA). My wife is the preschool programs for children’s with disabilities (PPCD) curriculum coach for a large school district near Houston Texas. During my free time I like to ride my bicycle, weight lift, and read books.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos' Nest at Rocky Mountain Deaf Theatre in Denver, CO.

Rocky Mountain Deaf Theatre’s (RMDT) Production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest will present the play with an exciting new perspective. Dale Wasserman's play, adapted from Ken Kesey's novel, paints a vision where the lost souls of patients of a mental institution manage to feel human when they are befriended by a rebellious new patient named McMurphy. In RMDT’s play, the patients will be from Deaf culture and the staff will be hearing, highlighting a real-life culture clash experienced by deaf people around the globe.

Our production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest will require lots of special work.  Hearing actors who don't know sign language will work together with deaf actors, so we will host workshops to help both groups of actors understand each others’ cultures and become comfortable working together.  We have two directors; one hearing, one deaf working together to make sure the play is enjoyable for everyone who comes to see it.  We also have two people working together to translate the script into ASL. They will ensure that the sign language will be beautiful and still match all the nuances of the script.  We want to touch as many people as possible with the production, so we will tour to 3-4 different cities in Northern Colorado!

 As a newer theatre company, our past productions have been smaller, low-budget plays. This play is going to be our big debut to get our theatre company on the map. We want Rocky Mountain Deaf Theatre to grow into a staple theatre of our region like the popular National Theatre of the Deaf in Connecticut, and Deaf West Theatre in California. We have budgeted for: theater rentals, actor salaries (16), lumber, director salary, lighting designer, stage manager, advertising, props, space rental for auditions, postage, cartage, printing, fight director, photographer, paint, set construction labor, Colorado Theatre Guild and affiliate, and incidentals… $12,300.

Risks and challenges

The idea of having our play depict two cultures struggling to communicate with each other comes with the risk of the hearing members of the audience not being able to understand the patients and their “deaf world,” and the risk of the deaf members of the audience not being able to understand the staff and their “hearing world.” Our directing team has already discussed the play line by line to address this issue. The result is going to be a never-before-seen mix of communication strategies that will keep the audience engaged, and leave them thinking about the deeper questions raised by the play for a long time to come.

The fashion world has been known to push the boundaries of what's socially acceptable and without a doubt, stir controversy. In the March 2013 issue of Numéro magazine, 16-year-old white model Ondria Hardin appears drenched in a very deep bronze for a fashion spread called "African Queen," reports Jezebel.com.

Hello! This would have been the perfect opportunity to hire a black model, as there are fewer job opportunities for non-white models. Eighty-two percent of the models at New York Fashion Week this season were white, cites Jezebel. More than 150 people have commented on author Laura Beck's article, including this one from "fashionlady"

"Can I just say as a young black model (I'm a girl) having worked my ass for the past 3 years, this hurts my soul. I'm happy for Ondria as a person but the amount of times I have been told 'oh sorry we already have a black girl that looks like you' or 'most of our clients don't hire black girls, sorry' and then I see THIS, it pisses me off! There are so many beautiful black models out there working TWICE as hard for barely half the recognition and the only time they give a shit about us is when they need our dark skin for some 'ethnic' photo shoot and in this case with Ondria, they couldn't even be bothered. Can I see a black girl do SCANDANAVIAN PRINCESS please? Hmmm?"

Steppenwolf For Young Adults Presents: "How Long Will I Cry?" Voices of Youth Violence

Steppenwolf’s performance ofHow Long Will I Cry?, featuring both American Sign Language Interpretation andOpen Captioning, is coming up on Monday, March 4 at 7:30pm.

Tickets are $20. This performance will feature interpretationby Patti Shore Kaden and Susan Sotnick, with assistance from Columbia College Interpreting Practicum student Jamie Antonick. Captioning will be presented by David Chu and c2, and is made possible with assistance fromTheatre Development Fund.

This performance will also feature a post-show discussion about the topic of youth violence in Chicago. Sign Language Interpretation and live captioning will also be available for the discussion.

What to expect: An opportunity to get your inner groove on through Vinyasa flow, as well as a better understanding of what this type of yoga looks and feels like. 

Join Alexandria in a ninety-minute workshop focusing on the asanas (physical practice) of Vinyasa flow, pranyamas (breathing), meditation and mudras (handshapes). She is a certified yoga instructor, having completed the 200-hour program at Laughing Lotus Yoga College, in NYC. When not doing yoga or teaching ASL, she is the artistic director of Senses Askew Company, a creative person extraordinaire with a chock full

of acting credits and a BFA to modern dance, and is an educator at the Intrepid, the Whitney, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the Rubin Museum of Art.
